My name is Kelly Yvonne Mitchell and I am running for Clerk of the District Court in Ada County.
I am an Idaho native and have lived in the Treasure Valley for all but a year of my life. I am married to my high school sweetheart, and together we have two boys. Our oldest, Dominic, is 9 and our youngest, Declan, is 2. People often comment on the age gap, assuming one of them was unplanned. That is true. Dominic is my sister’s biological son who, through an unexpected turn of events, came to us at the age of 3 ½. My husband and I were young college students at the time and were certainly not planning our family expansion, yet. Over the next year and a half, we navigated the child welfare and court systems to find our path to guardianship. We often refer to Dominic as our “beautiful surprise.” Both in jest and sincerity. Experiencing the foster care system and guardianship process firsthand was an eye-opening venture. I was working in the Clerk’s Office at the time, and still felt overwhelmed trying to navigate the court system.
I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Boise State University in 2015. I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment. I completed the program while parenting, working full time, and preparing for the arrival of my son in March of 2016.
My motto is “if you can be anything, be kind.” These are words I truly believe and try to live by every single day. I am inspired by my mother who worked tirelessly to raise my sisters and me while pursuing her nursing career. I am encouraged by my husband who loves and pushes me every day to pursue and achieve my goals. I am humbled by the many people who have shown their support for me in this campaign and in everyday life.
